It isn’t often that a publisher has the opportunity to learn from an author in ways that radically change her life. Working with Paul Graham to transform his blog, Eating Vegan in Vegas into an e-book of the same title, transformed me. I certainly knew that offering his e-book to a wide audience was a good fit for my company as well as for how I should begin dealing with my own life.
Many publishers see their relationship with their authors as a business arrangement. If we’re lucky, the people we sign contracts with can become friends but we’re more focused on their work than on a friendship.
In my case, producing Paul’s e-book and promoting it has transcended that typical relationship between author and publisher. I have a fatty liver and the best solution (because there is no cure) is to eat a plant-based diet and to get lots of exercise. In addition to this health problem, I also am committed to preserving and protecting this planet from all the degradation that has already befallen it due to human actions.
Sullivan Street Press has two more books under contract that will add to our knowledge of how best to live in communities dedicated to having as small a carbon footprint as possible (a book on ecovillages) and a book on our relationship to the other sentient beings we share this planet with. These books represent Sullivan Street Press’ commitment to its original tagline: We are here to change the publishing paradigm.
To me, this has always meant that we are here to help our planet and at first I thought that by publishing in e-book only formats was sufficient. Then I thought that by having a 100% carbon neutral website, we were doing enough.
Now, I see, it also must be a daily commitment on my part to keep changing how I function in terms of the planet. Paul lit a fire. It was at first slow to burn. I had already given up all dairy. But moving away from any form of animal product as a food source was a huge step and not as easy as just buying different foods to place in the refrigerator. Paul’s book provided me with help and support through the information he shared about the four reasons for becoming vegan.
Another person in my life played an important role–my wife, Suzanne Pyrch. She has been concerned about my liver and been cooking in ways to help me deal with it. Now that she is retired, she has taken over most of the cooking in our home because she loves to do it and she is a fabulous cook.
She read Paul’s e-book and was also moved by his arguments for why a plant-based diet is essential. She then began reading cookbooks and spice books and has been developing a proficiency with vegan cooking that is beyond delicious.
My life has been enriched by knowing and working with Paul Graham. I thank him for helping Suzanne and me to settle into this wonderful new eating world we now live in.
And for the rest of this year, a special promotion has begun. Sullivan Street Press would like to be able to help Paul help more people. The next step for Paul is to go to a new community and help them organize their vegan community in the ways he has been working with the vegan community in Las Vegas. Buying his e-book will contribute to those efforts.
